What it is

Botulinum toxin placed in the under-arm skin reduces the activity of sweat glands for months at a time — a discreet medical answer to a daily problem in Dubai's climate.

What it addresses

Excessive under-arm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis): sweating well beyond what the body needs to cool down, often even without heat or exercise. Treatment can reduce under-arm perspiration and visible sweat marks on clothing, helping you feel fresher and more comfortable day to day.

What you should see

Under-arm sweating is usually markedly reduced, with fewer sweat marks on clothing and less need to reapply antiperspirant. The effect is temporary and wears off gradually, so treatment is repeated when sweating returns. Results vary.

What it does not do

  • It does not cure hyperhidrosis: the effect wears off and treatment needs repeating
  • This under-arm treatment does not address sweating of the hands or feet
  • It does not target odour directly, although drier skin gives odour-causing bacteria less moisture
  • It does not tighten skin or remove hair
  • It is not a stand-alone treatment for body odour when excess sweating is not the cause

Who it is not for

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Infection, inflammation or a rash in the under-arm area
  • Neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert–Eaton syndrome
  • Allergy to botulinum toxin or any ingredient of the product (some brands contain traces of cow's milk protein)
  • A bleeding disorder or blood-thinning medication, unless the doctor agrees
  • Certain medicines that interact with botulinum toxin, such as aminoglycoside antibiotics
  • Under 18 years of age

Areas

  • Both underarms
  • The sweat-producing area of each underarm, which may be mapped first with a simple sweat test

Downtime, in full

Usually minimal: mild tenderness or small bruises may appear at the injection points, and most people return to work and social plans the same day.

Comfort and anaesthesia

Treatment involves a series of small, shallow injections across each underarm, felt as brief pinpricks. A topical anaesthetic cream or ice may be used to keep it comfortable.

Timeline

Sweating usually starts to reduce within a few days, with the full effect at about two weeks. Results typically last four to nine months, around six months on average and sometimes longer, so treatment is usually repeated once or twice a year.

After the treatment

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and heavy lifting for 24 hours
  • Avoid antiperspirant, deodorant and shaving for 24 hours
  • Do not massage or rub the underarms
  • Keep the underarms clean and dry
  • Wait one week before under-arm laser hair removal or waxing
  • Showering as normal is fine
  • A review at about two weeks may be offered to treat any small areas that are still sweating

How people describe it

  • Sweating through shirts within hours
  • Worrying about visible sweat marks in meetings and at social events
  • Changing clothes in the middle of the day
  • Irritation from strong antiperspirants
  • Constant dampness in Dubai's heat and humidity
  • Avoiding colours and fabrics that show sweat
  • Worrying about odour because of constant moisture
