What it does not do
- It does not remove every hair in one session: a course of sessions is needed
- It is not effective on white, grey, red or very light blonde hair
- It does not treat pigmentation, veins or wrinkles
- It is not a treatment for infected hair follicles (bacterial folliculitis), which need medical care first
- It may not remove the need for occasional maintenance, as hormones can activate new follicles over time
Who it is not for
- Active skin infection, open wounds or a herpes outbreak in the area
- Photosensitising medication, including recent isotretinoin, unless cleared by the doctor
- A history of keloid or abnormal scarring in the area
- Current or past gold therapy, or photosensitising herbal supplements such as St John's wort
- A fresh tan or self-tan on the area
- White, grey, red or very light blonde hair, which the laser cannot target effectively
- Light-sensitive epilepsy
- Tattoos in the area (inked skin is avoided or shielded)

Downtime, in full
Mild redness and small bumps around the follicles are common and usually settle within a few hours to two days, so most people carry on with their day as normal. Rarely, blistering or temporary changes in skin colour can occur, particularly on darker or recently tanned skin.
Comfort and anaesthesia
Most people feel a warm, snapping sensation, like the flick of a rubber band. Venus Epileve's integrated cooling helps keep treatment comfortable, and a topical anaesthetic cream may be used on more sensitive areas.
Timeline
Treated hairs usually shed within one to three weeks. A visible reduction often shows after two or three sessions; the full-body course is six sessions, spaced about six to eight weeks apart, and some areas may need more. Occasional maintenance sessions may be needed, as hormones can activate new follicles over time.
After the treatment
- Apply SPF to any treated skin exposed to the sun
- Avoid heat, saunas, steam rooms and intense exercise for 24–48 hours
- Shave only between sessions: no waxing, plucking or threading
- Use a soothing aloe gel or the cream provided if follicles feel irritated
- Exfoliate gently from day three or four to help treated hairs shed
- Tell your therapist about any new medication or recent tan before each visit
- Shave the area 24 hours before each session, as instructed
