Why it happens
Ingrown Hairs & Shaving Irritation, explained plainly.
An ingrown hair occurs when a hair that has been cut or pulled curls back into the skin or grows sideways beneath the surface. The body treats it as a foreign object, producing a red, sometimes tender bump that can leave a dark mark. Coarse or curly hair, close shaving, waxing and friction from tight clothing all increase the risk. Heat and sweat add irritation. Areas of dense hair growth are most often affected.
