Why it happens
Thin Upper Lip, explained plainly.
Lip shape is largely inherited; some upper lips are simply finer than others. With age, the lip loses collagen and volume, its border softens and the distance between nose and lip lengthens, so less of the pink shows. In some people the muscle around the mouth rolls the lip inwards on smiling, so that it seems to vanish; in others, the muscles that lift the upper lip raise it higher than usual, and more gum shows. Sun exposure and smoking contribute to fine vertical lines above it.
